First of all, Rodney and I want to thank all of you for coming to last
night’s meeting. What a great turnout for only our second meeting! AND,
now because of that, we received confirmation this morning from Joe Healy
that he will indeed be our guest speaker at the August meeting!!!
I know most of you last night recognized Joe’s name when we mentioned him,
but for those who haven’t maybe heard of him, Joe Healy (www.devfish.net)
is the Developer Evangelist for Florida. Joe’s geographical responsibility
is to provide ‘developer care’ for the Gulf States District for the East
Region Developer team. As such, he has responsibilities to bring .NET
development to the masses in his area.
Joe serves a multitude of clients, from corporate accounts to broad reach
events and User Groups. He lectures on various development and
architectural topics focused around the .Net Frameworks, Visual
Studio.NET, and associated servers.
Joe worked previously for Microsoft Consulting Services in the custom
Application Development arena, focusing on Internet, Web Services, Rich
Client, B2B, and browser delivered systems for Microsoft Consulting
Services.
Joe’s presentation at the August 28th meeting will be “Visual Studio 2008
Service Pack 1″. - Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 Overview – “more than
a service pack” – Currently in beta testing, VS2008 SP1 is planned for
release in late summer. It will deliver significant new components for
web developers, including ASP.NET Dynamic Data, ADO.NET Entity Framework,
and ADO.NET Data Services. Also including are a myriad of other features.
We’ll take an overview snapshot of SP1 during this session.
Having Joe come is a huge honor for our new users group, so please do
spread the word for this next meeting. We will be sending out the new
location info by the end of next week.
Thank you again for all your support, and your feedback is always welcomed!
Cheers,
Karla

Karla,
Excellent job on getting Joe Healy already. That speaks volumes. I truly enjoyed last night’s meeting. As a new DotNet developer (seven months under my belt…I come from a 12 year MS Access development background) I am glad to see the 101 mentality practiced by the SQL Server group. Developers and techs are a proud group and usually think the person sitting next to them knows exactly what the speaker is talking about, which is rarely the case. As much as I understand the need for more advanced topics and discussion, it would be great if at least half the meeting could always be dedicated to 101 material. I feel we will learn more, attend more meetings, and not feel so reluctant to ask questions, or even one day, become presenters ourselves.
I am so happy to see this group hit the ground running. As a developer who heavily relies on databases, this SQL Server group provides a perfect fit!
I am looking forward to the next meeting.

Karla & Rodney,
We had a great night last night! The food was delicious, the timing in/out perfect, the programs “right on target” … everything was awesome. I want to thank you personally for organizing this group, I know it is not easy and takes lots of time and phone calls … I don’t know who is taking care of all the expenses, but let us know if we can contribute on anyway to alleviate the expenses.
I am looking forward to see Joe Healy again, and hopefully have Sharepoint (with SQL integration) presentation next!!!
Thanks again!
ps. After being excited seen Rodney using the Reporting Services in Visual Studio 2008, I went home to recreate it and found out that VS2008 was giving errors when initially trying to create a Reporting Project … I searched the message given to find out somewhere in Google that Reporting Services VS2008 has problems running on Windows Vista …??? The exact VS2008 error message is ” Requested Registry Access is not allowed.” after doing File –> New Project - Reporting –> OK
